The Grand Opening Splash!
It seemed like an ordinary day. The birds were singing and the sun was shining. This wasn’t an ordinary day, though. It was the grand opening of the Central Mall. It just so happened that Josh and his two best friends, Ben and Amy, were going there.
“Are you guys excited for the grand opening?” asked Josh. Josh is the leader of the three kids. He has blonde hair and dark blue eyes. Some say he looks like a movie star. He likes it when people say that.
“Yeah!” said Ben. “But I don’t know why they are opening a mall.” Ben is the one who asks most of the questions. He puts more thought into things than most kids his age, which happens to be 13, like his pals. He has black hair and brown eyes and wonders what it would be like if he didn’t exist.
“That’s kind of stupid,” Amy replied. “We all know why they are opening the mall.”
“Why?” Ben asked.
“Because, all JHK Town has is a Wal-mart.” Amy said. “We all need something other than a Wal-mart, especially when we know they don’t lower their prices!” Amy is an interesting girl for her age. Usually, 13 year-old girls talk about cute guys, clothes, shopping and what not. Amy not only does all of the above, she makes corny jokes all the time which usually gets on her friends nerves, but today is a special day. She has long, brown hair and has hazel eyes.
“C’mon, guys!” exclaimed Josh. “It’s about to start!” So the trio went off to the grand opening of the Central Mall. Finally, they made it.
The Central Mall was huge. There were sparklers ready to explode, there were balloons ready to fly up into the sky, and banners all around. There were even fire works ready to take off as soon as the mayor finished his long, boring speech and cut the long, luscious, golden ribbon with his strangely large scissors.
“This place is very crowded.” Josh whispered.
“Yeah.” Ben agreed. “I wonder if the whole town is here?”
“Sure looks like it.” Josh replied.
All of a sudden, after the mayor’s speech was finished, a drum roll came up. Everybody was filled with anticipation, like a glass filled with water. Then, with a loud and mighty SNIP, the mayor cut the ribbon. Sparklers exploded, balloons flew up into the sky, and fire works took off as a rush of people ran inside.
Josh, Amy, and Ben were amazed with what they saw. There were lights as far as the eye could see, stores all around, and even a few escalators and elevators here and there.
“Wow!” Ben said in amazement.
“Lets shop!” Amy shouted. “I really want to get a clown nose for my next joke!”
“Easy there, Amy.” Josh said. “Lets meet at that fountain over there. The one that looks like a dolphin.” Yes, that was a beautiful dolphin. Already people were taking pictures beside it. The great detail of the marble fountain was magnificent. It even spit out what looked like the clearest water anybody has ever seen. No wonder why people take pictures beside it.
“Okay!” Ben and Amy said at the same time. Then they went off. They explored through and through, and bought many things. Eventually, they met each other about 5 feet away from the fountain. There stood a huge puddle of water that was practically unnoticeable.
“Lets sit at that bench.” Josh said, pointing at one of many benches by the fountain.
“Okay.” Ben said.
“Okay.” Amy said.
When they started walking, they slipped on the water. It was almost like a slip n’ slide, except without that rubber like material and everybody is standing up. They eventually went in the fountain with a big SPLASH. Then everybody around the fountain started pointing and laughing as hard as they could. For the three, it felt like the new Central Mall walls were closing in on them very slowly, savouring the horrible laughter, making them blush and want to crawl into a deep, dark hole and stay there forever and ever. Then they got up, picking up their wet stuff they just bought, and left, not able to show their faces at the Central Mall again.
THE END
The point of this story was to write about someone feeling a certain emotion. My emotion was embarrassement.
Did you like my story?
Could you tell it was about embarrassment?
A City in the Rainforest
The Project
An American company is planning on building a city in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest. They plan for it to be an American only project. They promise it would be one of the biggest cities in the world. They would name this city R.F
City, the R.F standing for rainforest. They think that the cost of the city will be around 30 million dollars, including the lights, buildings, and other such things.
They plan on building the city in four sections. In each section, there would be schools, a hospital, a police station, and a fire station. Also, there would be homes like trailers, apartments, and duplexes. For entertainment, there would be a zoo, an aquarium, a theatre, an arcade, and other fun places to go to. For transportation, there would be an air port, a train station, and subways.
In the middle of all four sections, there would be another section, making Main Street. Main Street would consist of car dealerships, Laundromats, grocery stores, and other important businesses. There would be other businesses like a Wal-mart, Canadian Tire, and The Bay. There would also be a huge mall on Main Street that would consist of clothing stores, jewellery stores, pet stores, and more. Main Street would also consist of fast-food restaurants like Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Boston Pizza, Burger King, KFC, Tim Horton’s, and more.
Roads would be connected to every section in the city. They would be coming from Main Street, because that is the busiest place in the city. There would also be roads between the buildings on each section. The roads would be made out of concrete and would have a yellow line painted on it.
There will be lots of pollution in this city, but they will try to lower it after the city is built. They already have plans. They are thinking that everybody must recycle and that you can only use hybrid vehicles, other transportation devices such as bikes, or you could walk. Nothing can stop the pollution from the factories and businesses, though.
The Ecosystem
Now imagine yourself in the rainforest. Light is dim. Try to look at the many trees that you walk past by. Try to look at the frogs hop by you in a flash because they are scared of you. Don’t be afraid of the possible dangerous animals like snakes, because they aren’t anywhere near you at the moment. Look down at the pure soil beneath you as the temperature is warm and moist. Try to look for the few people that live here. You would probably find them in tribes. You might make some new friends if you do.
The Amazon Rainforest is located in northern
Brazil and south of the Equator. It is a Tropical Rainforest. It is a Tropical Rainforest because of the location and climate. The climate is very humid and wet. The Amazon Rainforest gets about 2m of rain each year, which is about 3.8 cm each week. The temperature is usually 24-27° C. The soil is about 7.8-10 cm thick. There is also thick clay underneath.
There are many animals in the rainforest. For example, there are frogs, apes, snakes, birds, butterflies and other insects, humans, owls, jaguars, monkeys, rats. There are also Anacondas, Bushmasters, Harpy Eagles, Howler Monkeys, Kinkajou, Sloth, Scarlet Macaw, Spider Monkey, and the Toucan. Did you know that there are more insects in the rainforest than other animals? Most of the animals are ground dwellers and there are less animals living in the trees.
There are many lovely plants that grow in the Amazon Rainforest. Most of them grow in trees to get more sunlight. These are usually orchids, bromeliads, moss, roots, and wooden vines. The plants that grow in trees also live in the ground too. There are also plants that live in the water like the Rafflesia flower and the water lily.
There are many tribes that live in the rainforest like the Yanomami tribe. This is the biggest tribe. Also, the Caboclos tribe lives in the Amazon Rainforest. They are very skilled hunters. Positives and Negatives
This is a good idea socially because it gives people a place to live. For example, there are crowded places like
Hong Kong. If some of them moved down to the Amazon Rainforest, it would be less crowded in
Hong Kong. It also gives the tribes a better education, health, and just a better life. This is a bad idea socially because people would have to leave their homes to go to
R.F
City and people would be very sad to leave. Also, what if the tribes don’t want to change their lives?
This is a good idea economically because having a whole city provides a lot of jobs for people, especially the tribes. This is a bad idea economically because it is going to cost too much to build the city that people aren’t even going to go to because it costs a lot to even go to the Amazon Forest. Even if people come to
R.F
City, the taxes would have to be very high just to keep the place running. This would result in people moving out.
This is a good idea environmentally because there would still be some rainforest left for the animals to go too. This is a bad idea environmentally because there won’t be enough space for the animals to live in. Also, the climate is very hard to live in. The soil won’t be able to support all the buildings either.
Concerned Groups
When this idea was purposed to the U.S Government, they became concerned about how much all of this is going to cost. They were also wondered if a lot of Americans moved to
R.F
City. If they did, there would be less money for the Government.
Some construction workers were hired just in case they were going to build
R.F
City. They were concerned if they were going to get paid enough, or even at all. Plus, they would have to travel a lot, which would cost a lot of money. In the end, their pay might not be worth it.
Three days after the idea was purposed to the Government, the AROA (American Rights of America) heard about it. They were, of course, concerned about the animals. Where would the animals go? How would the zoo keepers treat the animals? Would the animals be happy? All these questions went through their minds.
A final concerned group is the villagers. They feel uneasy about this proposal. What would happen to their traditions and customs? What would happen to their way of life? Would life get better or worse? Questions like these run through their heads.
Would you let this company build a city in the rainforest? Why? Why not?
